Hello and welcome to the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group
Welcome to the Home Page of the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group, a joint specialist group of both the Geological Society of London and the Mineralogical Society. The group, started in 1963-4 (History), provides a focus for U.K. study of magmatic processes and volcanology through organisation and sponsorship of scientific meetings and fieldtrips. In particular, we organise an annual thematic and research in progress meeting, hosted at a U.K. university.
Committee Positions
Ordinary Members: Marian Holness and Thor Thordarson have completed their term on the committee as Ordinary Members, and we would like to thank them both for all their efforts. We are seeking two new Ordinary Members to replace them on the committee for a three year term. If you are interested in standing please contact Kate Dobson (Kate.Dobson@ges.gla.ac.uk), and supply a short (1/2 size A4) blurb about yourself and why you want to stand. All nominees should also supply the the names and contact details of a proposer and a seconder.
Student Representative: Becky Williams has done a great job as
our first student representative on the committee, but is also stepping
down. We are therefore seeking a new student rep. The position of
student rep was new last year, so part of Becky's remit was to
determine how her successors would be selected. If you are interested
in standing please
contact Kate Dobson (Kate.Dobson@ges.gla.ac.uk),
and
supply
a short
(1/2 size A4) blurb about yourself and why you want to stand. This
position open to all senior (3rd or 4th year) PhD students that have
attended at least one VMSG meeting. The student representative can
only be a successful if they are known within the community, so we ask
that all nominees should supply the the names and contact details of
two supporting VMSG members. One of your supporting members should be
a student, and the other should be an academic (lecturer or post-doc).
Your supporting members do not need to be from your own department.
Your academic supporting member must not be your supervisor.
If contested, the Student Rep will be elected by an electronic vote.
Deadline for all nominations for all three positions is 30th
September. Elections will be held
electronically in October/November and the newly elected committee
members will be in position for the meeting in Cambridge in January.
