Athletics

Athletics has always enjoyed a strong tradition at Durham University, many of our athletes in recent years have medalled at the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) championships. Some of our athletes go on to compete in even higher competition such as Olympic, World and European triple jump champion Jonathan Edwards.

Athletes train throughout the year, with the main focus in Autumn and Winter being on Strength and conditioning work. In epiphany term most of our athletes compete on the indoor circuit including the BUCS indoor championships. the main focus however is the BUCS Outdoor competition which is held around the start of May.

At the club we cater for all distances on the track, all the jumps (including Pole-Vault) and some of the throws. A large proportion of the team are coached by former World Double-Decathlon silver medalist Peter Coates who is ideally suited to coach such a wide range of events!

There is also a Warm Weather trip, around the end of the easter holidays, which is specifaclly geared for getting athletes into shape for BUCS, though anyone is more than welcome to come.

There is a lot of information on the website concerning athletics at Durham, including our training schedule which can be found here. However, if your question is not answered, please get in touch with the Athletics Captain, or come down to training and ask a member of the club.

You do not have to represent GB to be a member of the club, many of our athletes come down for the social aspect and to keep fit, and most often find the competitions themselves very rewarding.
