Durham Prison
Four teams of ordinands from Cranmer Hall, Durham have just returned from an intensive weekend mission. They worked with congregations in three tough ex-mining villages: Easington, Sacriston and Carrville, as well as with the chaplain and inmates at Durham Prison.
The ordinands have been planning for the weekend mission since before Christmas and have been working closely with the clergy and congregations in order to ensure that the activities and events were relevant and appropriate to the context. They engaged in a wide range of activities including Messy Church, all-age services, handing out hot cross buns in the street, litter picking, reading with children in local libraries, hosting social evenings, prayer walks and youth work.
When asked for feedback, one of the host clergy said: 'The team get 10 out of 10. The social evening was a triumph and their testimonies were powerful and memorable. They role modelled team working in an exemplary fashion and had exellent interpersonal skills. We hope to invite them back to lead worship with us again before they leave for curacies.' Members of local communities reported a fantastic weekend. Clergy and congregations spoke of feeling blessed and encouraged. One of the ordinands said, 'This kind of mission - serving local parishes and communities - is hugely significant in a part of the country where serious social deprivation is often the norm. We have been privileged to play a small part in growing God's Kingdom here in the North East.'
Cranmer Hall regularly send ordinands out on mission as part of a rigorous training for ordained ministry.

Our new MATM module will be of interest to both ordained colleagues and also Readers. 'Preaching from the Synoptic Gospels' provides an opportunity to explore in depth the theological challenges of the Synoptic Gospels and how these impact on preaching from these texts. Some of the material in the module is developed from the Preaching Conferences which are held at St John’s College each year and therefore those who have regularly attended the conferences need to be aware of this. Read more about the module....
