Botanic Gardens
Saturday 11th October 2008
The first event of this term is task up at the Botanic Gardens.
The Botanics is part of the University and it's purpose is to preserve rare and interesting plants from around the world. In total it is 18 acres part of which is a meadow which is where we will be doing a few jobs on Saturday.
Our tasks include:
Weeding a newly planted hedge at the top of the meadow behind Butler College
Raking grass to allow access on the round walk around the gardens and meadow
Making some habitat piles out of fallen branches in the woods, so all the animals can get cosy for the winter!
Remove some of the seed heads from Corncockle plants
We are also being treated to a guided tour of the gardens around midday!
You can come along for the morning 10-12:30 or the afternoon 12:30-4 or you can stay for the whole day and have a picnic!
If you are coming for the whole day then make sure to bring lunch and all bring any drinks and snacks, there will be plenty of time for tea breaks!
Make sure to dress sensibly, avoid jeans as they don't dry quickly and bring a strong pair of boots of wellies and waterproofs etc
If you're not sure where the botanics are then here are the directions:
The gardens are behind Collingwood College, heading up South Road from the science site you want to take a left (the second left from the bottom), the sign post does show the Botanic Garden! Keep following the road round to the right until you come to a small carpark and the sign for the garden. We will be there to meet you!!
If you're at all unsure or want any more information then email conservation.society@durham.ac.uk
See you on Saturday!
