The Tool Shed

The Conservation Volunteers Society has had a tool shed in Hild Bede for at least twenty years, so combined with borrowing equipment from whoever we're doing a task for, we run into quite a variety of different pieces of kit.

Here's something about the typical tools that you might use one day.

Fork

This puts air in soil.
Danger*: Fork-to-foot hospitalisation
Note: Our forks are rustier than a stingray barb.

Loppers

This cuts branches off trees, provided they are no thicker than your thumb.
Danger: Don't test on thumb.

Bow Saw

This cuts down trees
Danger 1: Cutting off legs / arms
Danger 2: Tree lands on volunteer / member of public

Wellies

Keep feet dry when cleaning streams or knocking up duckboxes.
Danger: Sudden deep water overfill

Waders

For when wellies just aren't enough to keep you dry. Expect to see these if we do work with river trusts.
Danger: Sudden extra-deep water overfill

Spade

Used for planting trees, attacking vines, and generally moving earth around.
Danger: Falling over when you try and jump on it

Slasher

Cuts back weeds and grass from path edges
Danger: Sudden toe loss. Use wellies not sandals.

Minibus

Used for getting to nature reserves
Danger: Alcoholic violent driver in jail (bonus 20 points)

*NB: None of these incidents** have occured on our conservation trips. So enjoy!
