Join us
Durham University Concert Band is open to every registered student at Durham University (members of staff please enquire). Most people join at the start of the year by signing up at the Fresher's Fair and then coming to the first rehearsal. There are no auditions whatsoever! We are quite happy to take on new members at any stage of the year provided it is not too close to a concert. There really shouldn't be a reason why you can't join! Concert Band is a fun society to be a part of and we are always pleased to welcome new members to the band. If you have any queries about whether or not to join, please drop us an e-mail.
Membership costs £7 for the whole year. You will find you get your moneys worth very quickly! Subs will be collected by Catherine after about three or four rehearsals to give you a chance to see whether or not you want to join permanently. Most of this goes towards booking venues, publicity, and buying / commissioning new music as well as squash and biscuits for rehearsals.
We rehearse every Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm in the Music Department on Palace Green, next to the Cathedral, opposite the Union Society building - map.
We accept most kinds of wind and brass instruments, the sort of instruments we have in the band are listed below:
Brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba)
Bass (string or electric if you have an amp)
Woodwind (flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, oboe, bassoon)
Percussionists *
(The music department does not offer storage rooms for large instruments unfortunately)
* As we rehearse in the music department we have access to a drum kit, auxiliary percussion, timpani and other mallet percussion.
Soloists
We are always happy to hear suggestions from soloists for concerti and other pieces arranged for solo instruments and ensemble. If you have a suggestion please contact the society, and depending on feasibility and suitability we might be able to purchase or make an arranged version of some standard orchestral concerti. |
