DUCB Executive Committee 2012/2013

President - James Salter

Instrument - Bass Trombone
Level of Study - 4th Year
Subject - Maths
College - St Cuthbert's Society
james.salter@durham.ac.uk

James gave an inspiring speech before he was elected President, "Well someone has to do it...I hope I will do a good job" and a lot is expected of him this year. As he was treasurer last year, he knows the ins and outs of the society. He is an intelligent guy but is also a fantastic bass trombone player so we are very privileged to have him as our President this year.

The role of President involves taking responsibility for the band and Exec committee and ensuring the smooth running of all the band’s activities. It also means organising concerts and liaising with other societies, so any queries get in touch!

Secretary - Catrin Powell

Instrument - Clarinet
Level of Study - 3rd Year
Subject - Engineering
College - Grey
c.v.powell@durham.ac.uk

Catrin is a very organised and talented clarinet player. Like James she works hard in her degree yet still manages to be a committed member of concert band! The role of secretary is perfectly suited to Catrin.

Her role is to keep minutes of the meetings and she will be sending us all emails giving us important information such as when rehearsals are, information about concerts and other stuff as well. Catrin is very lovely and extremely photogenic and at every rehearsal you will be greeted by her big smile and friendly personality.

Treasurer - Catherine Old

Instrument - Flute
Level of Study - 3rd Year
Subject - Maths
College - St Aidan's
c.l.old@durham.ac.uk

Catherine is a very clever and organised individual with an eye to improving our finances this year so we can make a profit like we did last year. Following in the footsteps of our current President, James Salter, Catherine has a big role to follow but with a creative mind, she is sure to think of ways we can make money and sensible ways we can spend the money we have.

Her role involves managing the band's finances, reimbursing the rest of the band for money they spend on the band such as reimbursing the social secretary for biscuits & squash and reimbursing the publicity officer for posters.

Librarian - Alice Schofield

Instrument - Flute
Level of Study - 3rd Year
Subject - Maths
College - Grey
a.l.schofield@durham.ac.uk

Alice is a very clever individual and was librarian for Concert Band last year as well. She did an amazing job, making sure no music got lost and she clearly enjoyed it as she is back for more. She is very good friends with our librarian Catrin. Alice is one of the friendliest members of the band and is our principal flautist with amazing talent.

Her role involves getting the music for us, keeping it safe in between rehearsals and distributing it during rehearsals. She is therefore a very important part of our weekly rehearsals.

Principal Conductor - Tam Thomas

Instrument - Trumpet
Level of Study - 4th Year
Subject - Engineering
College - Hild Bede
adam.thomas@durham.ac.uk

Adam, or "Tam" as he likes to be called was our associate conductor last year and took on the role with no previous experience but he clearly impressed as he was elected as our associate conductor for this year. Popular for his laid back attitude and good sense of humour, he made each rehearsal enjoyable to attend. Tam is keen to promote banter in the band to make it more amusing for all of us and is a very big presence at the socials. Tam's qualities include being able to pick out the players who are playing well in the band and praise them for their efforts. He has a large interest in photography and is able to take some stunning shots. Tam, like the rest of the exec, is extremely friendly and wants everyone to feel like they belong in the band.

Tam is the face of the band, the person you will see the most and he has the job of picking music and conducting half our repertoire. During rehearsals we are all at his mercy and if you back chat him, you will be the one conducting! He also has the job of training up our associate conductor, Eliot.

Associate Conductor - Eliot McGuire

Instrument - Alto Saxophone
Level of Study - 2nd Year
Subject - Music
College - St Mary's
eliot.mcguire@durham.ac.uk

Eliot is the youngest member of the exec and the only member of the exec who studies music beating off some very strong competition to get the post of associate conductor. He is an extremely talented musician with his first instrument being piano which he can play to diploma standard but he also plays alto saxophone which he plays in this band when he isn't conducting. Eliot is really friendly and greets everyone with his friendly northern accent.

As he is studying a conducting module this year, we all look forward to watching him improve throughout the year. He plays rugby and is a big fan of the rugby league club, the Huddersfield Giants. Eliot is another big presence at the socials and will be the second face of the band. His role involves selecting and conducting half the year's repertoire.

Publicity Officer - Luke Bentley

Instrument - Bass Trombone
Level of Study - 2nd Year
Subject - Maths and Physics
College - St Mary's
luke.bentley@durham.ac.uk

Luke didn't even know what a concert band was when he signed up for it, but he has felt right at home here and has even ended up on the exec! He loves being involved muscially and in first year was also in the Brass Band, Palatinate Orchestra, Hill Orchestra and the college jazz band Basement Jazz. He is alright at trombone, if a bit loud at times but tries his best to make everyone feel welcome in the band. He really enjoys the Concert Band socials and has a lot of faith in Clary for even better socials this year. In his first term at Durham, Luke shared a room with our associate conductor, Eliot! Luke can also play piano, managing to obtain a diploma in it!

Luke resurrected this website from being almost dead for 2 years to what it is now and is now in charge of keeping it updated and exciting. Any complaints for the website should be aimed at him by email. He is also responsible for producing and distributing posters for our concerts and he is also trying his hand at video advertisements to be uploaded onto Youtube and shared on Facebook so watch out for some exciting advertisements in the future.

Social Secretary - Clary Grundy

Instrument - Alto Saxophone
Level of Study - 3rd Year
Subject - Chemistry
College - Trevs
clarinda.grundy@durham.ac.uk

Clary is a bubbly, friendly member of the band, always smiling no matter what the situation is. She is also very intelligent and is the perfect person for the role of social sec. The socials she has put on already have been amazing, involving bar crawls culminating in Jimmy Allen's and Klute! Her way of making sure everyone has a good time is by getting herself drunk first, which a tactic which surprisingly works wonders. Everyone is encouraged to go to the socials and Clary will make sure everyone will have a good time. She will also be organising daytime socials for those who aren't into nights out, but non drinkers are more than welcome on nights out!

As social secretary, her role is to organise socials. Also to provide biscuits and squash at rehearsals, and possibly sort out stash. If you have a crazy idea for a social, let Clary know in the rehearsal or by email so our socials can be fun for everyone.
