Make A Difference Day
Saturday 27 October
SCA’s Make A Difference Day campaign was, for the second consecutive year, a great success. Over 40 volunteers got involved with the day’s one-off activities, either by helping out at Old Durham Gardens or by running a tea party for the elderly at Collingwood College. The latter not only provided an opportunity for people across generations to interact and share their experiences, but also showcased some of Durham’s finest talent, both musical and culinary: the performances and cake alike attracted high praise. At Old Durham Gardens, a seventeenth-century site near Maiden Castle, student volunteers braved the cold weather and made a valuable contribution towards restoring the gardens to their former glory.
Many of the volunteers had never been involved with SCA before, and the day offered them a great opportunity to meet like-minded volunteers and find out more about how SCA works with the local community. Then, to celebrate everyone’s hard work, the following evening saw SCA hold its first social of the year at Boathouse.
SCA Project Fair
Tuesday 9 October
With an estimated 1000 attendees, this year’s Project Fair was the biggest yet. Hundreds of students, both new and old, came along to check out SCA’s wide range of opportunities, and signed up to get involved. All 37 of SCA’s projects were represented, and each of them attracted masses of interest and enthusiasm. Volunteers also had the opportunity to complete CRB forms and find out all they needed to know about SCA’s college communities.
