Media Relations

Benefits of media work

Universities are increasingly being encouraged to be more accountable to the general public by the Government and the bodies from whom they receive their funding.  One of the most effective communication methods for public engagement is media coverage, given that, on average, over three-quarters of the UK population watch TV on a regular basis, almost half the British population reads a national newspaper, and almost a fifth of the global population uses the Internet.

Evidence shows media engagement can also bring an enhanced profile for the individual, their research group/department and the University; offers of funding or collaboration, as well as political influence and many other benefits.

Moreover, the Vice Chancellor,Professor Christopher Higgins, who himself has a national media profile, has ambitions for Durham to get more media coverage and is very supportive of staff engaging with journalists.
