Standing Orders

These Standing Orders should be read in conjunction with the General Committee section of Standing Orders available on the University’s website.
Membership
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships and Engagement) (Chair)
The Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Heads of Faculty)
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Warden of the Colleges
The Director of Human Resources (Deputy Chair)
The Treasurer
A lay member of Council*
In attendance:
The Director of the Health and Safety Service
Such other individuals as the Committee may agree
Secretariat
The Secretary to the Committee will be provided by the University Health and Safety Service.
Meetings
The Committee shall meet not less than twice a year.
The Chair may convene additional meetings according to business needs.
If a member is unable to be present at a meeting, it is expected that arrangements will be made for a briefed deputy to attend on their behalf.
Terms of Reference
The principal role of the Committee is to advise Council and the University Executive Committee (UEC) on University health and safety policy and strategy.
Specifically the Committee shall:
a) Advise on the key strategic objectives and priorities for delivering the University Health and Safety Policy.
b) Agree and monitor the key performance indicators for health and safety.
c) Monitor, on behalf of Council and UEC, the delivery of health and safety policy, strategy and plans and in particular, the University Health and Safety Programme.
d) Advise on the acceptability of residual risk.
e) Consider the outcome of audits of the University's health and safety management systems and recommend actions.
f) Review the resources applied to health and safety and ensure that they remain appropriate and proportionate.
g) Consider and recommend the Annual Report to Council on Health and Safety.
Reporting
The Committee shall report to Council and to UEC after each meeting.
*It is envisaged that this will be the lay Council member with oversight of Health and Safety
