Antony Long is Professor of Geography at Durham and an appointed staff member of Council.

He obtained a BA Honours degree in Geography from Durham in 1988 followed by a PhD in 1991.

Antony began his career as Research Assistant in the Department of Geography in 1991 before moving to the University of Southampton for his first Lectureship appointment. He returned to Durham in 1996 as Lecturer, was appointed Reader in 2000 and Professor in 2004.  He served as Head of the Department of Geography from August 2005 until July 2008, and is currently Head-elect.

Antony is a Quaternary scientist interested in reconstructing environmental change during the last 2.5 million years, with a particular interest in changes since the end of the last ice age (about 20,000 years ago).  He is known for his research into past sea-level and coastal change and for his contribution to the understanding of the evolution of the Greenland ice sheet in response to climate change.  His research is interdisciplinary and he works with a broad network of colleagues in related disciplines (eg geology, biological sciences, geophysics) in the UK and internationally.

He is editor-in-chief of 'Journal of Quaternary Science', a premier earth science journal in the field of Quaternary environmental change.

Antony is currently a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee and Chair of the Senate Discipline Committee and Chair of St Hild and St Bede College Council.
