Applicants

Thinking about applying to Durham University? Fantastic! Durham is a collegiate university, meaning that, as well as picking a subject to study, you'll also need to pick (or be assigned to) a college.

A college provides a home for you during your studying, and Collingwood has a fantastic community spirit and a huge number of things to do, too.

Where will I be living?

All first years at Durham are guaranteed a room in college. This room will usually be in what is affectionately known as ‘the old block', of which there are 8 blocks: Barnard, Jarrow, Wearmouth, Alnwick, Corbridge, Hexham, Lilburn and Otterburn. In these blocks, there are 10 rooms on each floor, each sharing 2 showers/a bath, 2 toilets and a kitchen area. Check out this page on college rooms.

Can I come and visit?

You are welcome to pay a visit if you cant make one of our open days, you dont have to give the college notice, but if you do you may be able to have someone show you around. Please contact the Admissions Secretary on +44 (0)191 3345015, or email  to arrange. Most people who are made an offer by Collingwood without having attended for interview are invited to join us for one of the University open days held at the end of March. Details of these will be included in the letter outlining your offer. If you get the chance, do come for the open day - they're very informative and huge fun and you get to experience what college is like for a night! We are very keen to make sure everyone coming to open days has a really good time.

College? Is that not where I go to do my A-Levels?

No. When you apply to Durham, like Oxbridge, you also apply to a college. At Durham, your college is the place you live in your 1st year, and additional years if you want to, but also the body to which you are a member of throughout your time at Durham. You'll find that most of your friends are from college as it is here you will send most of your time. Be it in the bar or playing sport, college gives you a fantastic opportunity to meet people from all years and subjects.
