6th June 2013, 20:30 to 21:30, The Senate Suite
Poetry and Passion: Reading Shakespeare's Sonnets
I shall describe a recent experiment with literary criticism designed to allow it to be more emotionally engaged by approaching poetry through other arts – philosophical writing, visual art, prose fiction, music, and film. One aspect of this new approach, which I think of as ‘dwelling in the words’, involves performance as a form of criticism. I shall explain this idea of performance and exemplify it by reading a selection of Shakespeare’s love poems, mainly concentrating on the group addressed to the ‘lovely boy’ commonly known as ‘Mr WH’.
The talk will commence at 8.30pm in the Senate Suite, all welcome.
