Trevelyan College

Research within the College

The Principal, Professor Martyn Evans, works in the area of philosophy of medicine and the inter-disciplinary field of medical humanities. He is co-Director of the University’s Centre for Medical Humanities. Many other individual members of Trevelyan Senior Common Room work within the broad field of health-related research and are Fellows of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, and from 2013 Trevelyan is the regular home for public meetings of the Durham Forum for Health, which hosts discussions combining clinicians, the public and academics.

Postgraduate facilities

Postgraduates are members of the Middle Common Room. Their residential accommodation is concentrated in a designated ‘postgraduate centre’ in the heart of College; currently approximately 50 of our c180 postgraduates live there, with most of the remainder living in private sector accommodation. The College boasts a range of social and learning support facilities including study spaces, two dedicated IT rooms and a number of wifi zones within the building. Social facilities include music rooms, television lounge, fitness suite and an excellent Bar in the centre of College, together with an on-site sports hall. Postgraduates are automatically associate members of the Senior Common Room and enjoy full access to the SCR Lounge.

Postgraduate facilities

The Senior Common Room engages enthusiastically with the MCR, holding regular joint research events. The many academics among the SCR membership, together with invited visitors including Visiting Fellows, provide a regular source of presentations of their own academic research. The SCR enjoys links with all academic departments, although periodically particularly close affinities emerge, such as those with the Dept of Chemistry and the School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health. Visiting Fellowships are supported by the all-Faculty Institute of Advanced Study, the Sir William Luce Memorial Fund, and Trevelyan College itself.
