Research in Colleges

Josephine Butler College

Josephine Butler College is a thriving scholarly community, hosting a range of research activities involving academics, postgraduates and undergraduates. It will be hosting its first IAS fellow (Dr. Bob Fosbury) in 2013, but has a number of links with different departments and research institutes. As one might expect, given the person after whom the college is named, one area of interest is sexual exploitation: we have hosted a number of Josephine Butler Lectures on themes such as trafficking, prostitution and rape. With Ustinov College it is hosting a series of seminars on biographical methods in the social sciences.

The College’s research activities are led by The Principal, Adrian Simpson, whose research focuses on mathematics education and particularly the transition from learning mathematics at school to learning mathematics at university. He has published a number of books on key theories in mathematics education and, most recently, on assessment in mathematics, as well as over 100 academic papers and articles.

The MCR supports a series of scholars suppers for the postgraduate community on a wide range of topics from their own research or from that of external speakers. This has included topics in nanotechnology, the psychology of learning and roman archaeology. The College has developed an online scholarly journal to engage all members of the College in discussions of research and academic topics.
