College Christmas Celebrations
On Christmas Day 2011 a lunch was held in Durham Castle (University College) for our students from around the world, to enable them to join in the festivities of the day. Although Christmas was not spent with their families, students and staff from different colleges across the University happily celebrated together.
The Christmas Day lunch was the first of its kind at the University and the following poem and selection of photographs, sent to us by our students, capture the excitement, fun and atmosphere of this wonderful day.
Observations of a guest, honoured to be part of this yuletide 'International Student Experience' - the first at an English University.

On entering Durham Castle courtyard, we step into another time,
When Lords and Ladies met and duels were fought by those maligned.
Today, however, tells a totally different story,
When young men and women witness a modern day glory.
Arriving in dozens, brother, sisters and cousins,
From China, Nigeria, India and Iran,
And many more nations, to enjoy this special plan,
Conceived by a far- sighted gentle man.
These young people, so far from home,
Will, this Christmas, not be alone.

And what a delight to mingle with these guests,
Feeling their excitement as they look forward to the fest.
Cameras snapping, converstion buzzing, smiles so wide,
Slowly we move forward as a gently rolling tide,
To enjoy a sight worthy of so many gasps,
The Great Hall, as splendidly decorated as in times past.
When seated, almost two hundred folk, are welcomed and greeted with a universal 'prayer'.
And so the feast begins; and what a feast, of mostly traditional English fare.
Crackers are being pulled and mottos read,
Golden hats are poised on heads,
Smiles and laughter are taking over this magical Hall,
'Specially as the Pudding arrives, borne by ten Santas in all!

Then, for each table, the last surprise of 'pass the parcel',
Surely a first for this splendid Castle!
As old Masters look down from these ancient walls,
The final address gives thanks to all,
And, gradually, new found friends and old leave this history behind,
With lasting memories of a Christmas so kind......
