Visiting Durham

+Do you have an Open Day for prospective applicants?

We have an Open Day every summer; for details, see this page.

+I cannot attend the Open Day. When can I visit the department?

Every week during term, there is a regularly scheduled day and time for the admissions tutor to meet prospective applicants, and this is by far the most convenient time for you to visit us. If you cannot come then, try to come during university term, and we can usually arrange a meeting, provided that sufficient notice is given. For more details on when to visit the department, please see this page. Outside of university term is is not always possible to arrange to meet an academic member of staff, but if you are in Durham please do stop in to the departmental office and ask if there is anyone around.

+Can I visit during the summer?

Summer is not the best time for a prospective student to visit Durham. The town is quiet in the absence of students and the department is often empty. Summer is when academic members of staff concentrate on research and they are often away from Durham at conferences and archives or buried in the library. If you happen to come to Durham during the summer, the departmental office is open during business hours, and you are welcome to stop by and ask if there is anyone available to speak to you, but this cannot be guaranteed.

+What colleges should I visit?

That is entirely up to you; if you are coming to Durham, you should look at the college websites and contact them directly yourself.
