Deadline for Funding 2013/14
If you wish to apply for postgraduate funding, your application to Durham must be submitted via the on-line application system by the deadline of 5pm (GMT), Monday 18 February 2013. Any applications received after this date cannot be considered for funding. Please ensure that all transcripts and references are received within good time after this deadline. You must indicate when prompted on your on-line application that you wish to be considered for funding.
Funding available for PhD students
Arts and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Studenships
If you are a resident of the UK, these studentships cover full fees and maintenance — or fees only if you are a resident of any other European Union country. If you wish to be considered, please indicate the fact on your online application. More information is available here.
Durham Doctoral Studentships
Durham University runs a scheme which offers full remission of fees and a maintenance award for students embarking on a PhD course. Eligible applicants must also apply for external funding. Commonwealth Scholarships
Commonwealth citizens (and some others) intending to pursue full-time doctoral study are eligible to apply through Durham for a Commonwealth Scholarship, covering fees and maintenance. The deadline for the 2012 competition has now passed.

Durham Faculty of Arts & Humanities MA Scholarships
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities makes available a certain number of MA Scholarships (in 2011/12 there were 10 altogether), covering fees at the UK/EU rate. These are for students (Home/EU or Overseas) applying for taught or research MA programmes in the Faculty with the serious intention of progressing to PhD work. Ralph Lindsay Scholarship
The University offers a scholarship of £2,500 p.a. for a current or prospective full-time postgraduate student who is under the age of 25 on 1st October in the relevant year, and either attended Durham School, or was born in the dioceses of Durham or Newcastle, or is related to the founder, Ralph Lindsay. Preference is given to candidates wishing to study Classics. Subject to satisfactory progress and being less than 25 years old on 1st October in the start of the relevant year, tenure may be extended to a maximum of three years. Private Charities
Applicants are also encouraged to explore funding opportunities offered by private charities. (Note that the Wingate Scholarship scheme has, unfortunately, been suspended for 2012.)
