Communications Infrastructure Upgrade Project

Overview

The Communications Infrastructure Upgrade (CIU) project is delivering a major upgrade to Durham University's data and voice network which will provide a brand new, faster network and a more up-to-date telephone system. It was also a requirement for the Gateway Project building work taking place at the University's Science Site, which included the demolition of the central telephone exchange in North Lodge in March/April 2011.

In 2011, the project was expanded to include provision of extra bandwidth for JANET connectivity, eduroam implementation for Durham University, and the replacement of the existing wireless estate. Eduroam was implemented in May 2012, along with an extra 1Gb link to JANET. A new core wireless system has been implemented and wireless access points are being replaced from September 2012 to Easter 2013.
