Mac Service
CIS is pleased to announce increased support for Apple Mac machines within the University. We now provide a managed system for Macs as well as increased support for standalone Apple users. The Mac MDS Desktop provides an equivalent to the CIS MDS staff desktop for Windows on the Mac platform - with all the benefits of this service in terms of stability, security, full support from CIS whilst allowing MDS users a choice of platform. Staff who use and maintain their own Apple PCs can also benefit from advice from the IT Service. Development of this new service was as one of the main deliverables of the Desktop Environments Project initiated under the IT Strategy.
The CIS Mac managed service is built around the core support features of the Windows MDS system, providing:-
- Mac OSX 10.6,
- Secure login via Active Directory,
- A suite of core applications inc Office 2008, Antivirus, Graphics Editing,
- Deployable Applications via Apple Remote Desktop,
- Access to the University centralised file store,
- Remote Support via VNC from CIS support teams,
- Fully restorable core configuration in the unlikely event that a major software or hardware problem damages the system.

Apple has released the latest version of their desktop operating system. CIS have tested the main services for compatibility. At present, OSX 10.7 is not available for use with Mac MDS
If you have upgraded your Mac to OSX 10.7 you should always check with the software manufacturers of your applications for newer releases which are certified for OSX 10.7
