Power saving on the Networked PC service

Various features have been implemented on NPCS to conserve power, these include.

LCD Monitors

In all CIS classrooms old CRT monitors have now been replaced with efficent LCD monitors to reduce power consuption, while in use.

The majority of non CIS computer rooms (i.e. Colleges/Departments) also have LCD monitors.

Monitor shutdown

All NPCS machines are set up to power down the monitors after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Automatic Shutdown machines

All NPCS machines in Colleges/Departments computer rooms are set to automatically shutdown if not used for 40 minutes.

All CIS bookable classroom machines are set to automatically shutdown if not used for 80 minutes.

Machine Shutdown/Wake on Lan

All NPCS computer rooms are set to power down automatically at 21.00 and again at 23.00 every night. Machines that are logged on will remain so. This will save a considerable amount of power.

All NPCS machines are automatically powered up every Monday morning at 07.00 enabling the machines to install any necessary updates, because of the automatic shutdown these machies will power off automatcially if left idle.

Various 24 hour open access classrooms are part of this system, if a machine is required within these hours then it can be switched on as desired.

At present 2000 machines are part of this scheme

Potential Savings by having machines turned off for 12hours each night

Average power consumption per PC 135Watts * 1000 Machines = 270000Watts or 270KWatts

kW/Hr Cost per Unit £0.07 * 135KWatts = £18.90saved per hour

£18.90 saved per hour * 12 hours (average over night time)  * 365 days = £82,782

But in idle state the PC/Monitor still consumes 10Watts * 1000 Machines = 10000Watts or 10KWatts

kW/Hr Cost per Unit £0.07 * 10KWatts = £0.7 used per hour

£0.7 used per hour * 12 hours *365 days = £3,066

Potential Total savings = £82,782-£3,066= £79,716

Figures based on an average machine power consumption and average nightly energy cost, supplied by Durham E&B (updated May 2008).
