Web Steering Group

Background

The Web Steering Group was initially formed in 2004, where it led work on design and implementation of the new University website. On completion of the website project, it was determined that the Web Steering Group would continue to lead management of the University website until it was laid down in 2011.  From January 2009 three sub-groups reported to Web Steering Group - Web Marketing Group, Web Internal Communications Group and Web Functionality Group - in addition to the Web Editors Board.

The agreed terms of reference were that the Web Steering Group would:

i. Set and be responsible for the implementation of the strategy for the University website
ii. Ensure that the University website is aligned to both University strategy and to University IT strategy
iii. Ensure that content is up to date and that quality control mechanisms are effective
iv. Ensure that the functionality of the website supports the University's business needs
v. Ensure that the University website is aligned to its strategic objectives through regular monitoring of usage and feedback
vi. Ensure that the website represents best practice with respect to navigation protocols and accessible design
vii. Oversee and co-ordinate the work of its sub-groups
viii. Report to ITSG at each of its meetings, which in turn reports to UEC
ix.  After 12 months, review the operation of the web management structure, report to ITSG on its achievements and effectiveness and recommend any necessary changes

Membership

The group was chaired by Professor Seth Kunin (PVC, Arts & Humanities), who was also a member of IT Steering Group throughout the life of the WSG.  Membership consisted of a representative from each of the Faculties, the Colleges Division and the Professional Support Services, a representative from DSU, the Treasurer, Deputy Director of Communications, Director of University IT, and Chair of Web Editors Board.
