Can I connect my Mac to the Durham Exchange Service?

Can I use my preferred email client to connect to the Durham Exchange Service?
Any email client that uses the http protocol can be configured to connect to the Durham Exchange Service. Please note: the IT Service does not support these methods of connection to the Durham Exchange Service. You should consult the Help utility in the appropriate application should you require advice on configuring any of the above mailers for http access. The following mailers have been proven to work with the http protocol.
Evolution 2.0.4 - Linux
To start Evolution, either type: evolution or select 'Calendar' from the Office menu (pen and paper icon) at the bottom of the Gnome desktop.
When you run Evolution for the first time, it will ask you some configuration questions:
Identity:
Fill in a name for the account, your own name and your email address.
Receiving email:
The server type is Microsoft Exchange.
Under Configuration, type in your ITS username.
The OWA URL is http://exdurf.dur.ac.uk/
Click on Authenticate and enter your ITS password in the pop-up box.
Receiving Options:
The Global Catalogue server name is mds.ad.dur.ac.uk
Notes:
Once you have completed the configuration, your home directory will contain a directory called .evolution which contains your Evolution configuration settings. DO NOT DELETE this directory as it will also contain any locally stored emails, diary entries, tasks or memos.
You can change your configuration for Evolution at any time by going to Edit | Preferences.
If you lose your connection to the Exchange server at any time, click on the connector icon at the bottom left corner of the Evolution window to attempt to reconnect.

Outlook 2007 - Windows
From the Menu Toolbar select Tools | Account Settings
Ensure the Email tab is selected and click New
Select the Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP option and click Next
Tick the Manually configure server settings option and click Next
Select Internet Email and click Next
Add your name and email address
Select HTTP from the Account Type drop-down menu
Select Other as the Service Provider from the drop-down options
Type http://exdurf.dur.ac.uk/exchange/your ITS username in the Server URL text box
Add your ITS username and password - the username must be in the format mds\xxxxxx Tick the option to remember your password
Click Next then Finish then Close
How do I configure Outlook on a non MDS computer to connect to Exchange?
Please note that Outlook configuration via the method below is only available for staff and research postgraduate accounts.
In order to connect Microsoft Outlook to the Durham Exchange service, your non MDS computer must meet the following minimum security policy.
- You have McAfee ePO installed
- You have enabled Windows Update using the ITS WSUS update server
- You have Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 installed
- Your computer is connect to the University LAN
The utility below will install ePO, configure Windows Update and check which version of Outlook you have installed. Please note that you MUST have administrator rights on your computer to run the utility.

Once the above criteria is met and/or verified you will be prompted for your ITS Username, you should enter this in the box provided.
Outlook will then prompt you to import email account settings, select Yes.
When prompted by Outlook for your username and password, you must prefix your username with mds e.g. mds\dcl0xxx
The final stage of the utility is to import Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird Address books. Please see the Infosheet below for further information.

If you do not wish to import any Address books, click No when prompted.
Once the utility has successfully completed Outlook configuration, you may run Microsoft Outlook.
If you have any secondary email accounts configured in Outlook, you will need to reconfigure these on restarting Outlook.
What are the settings for the Exchange Global Address Book via LDAP?
Unsupported mail clients can connect to LDAP using the following settings:
hostname: mds.ad.dur.ac.uk
base DN: OU=People,DC=mds,DC=ad,DC=dur,DC=ac,DC=uk
Port number: 389
Bind DN: username@mds.ad.dur.ac.uk
Why is my email being moved to Exchange following continuation of my account?
As a result of completing a continuation form to extend your ITS account, your email will be migrated to the Exchange service.
Microsoft Exchange offers advanced facilities for shared working. These include email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks. This information is stored centrally on the Exchange server which enables users to work collaboratively.
The Exchange service is the new email system which is being used by staff running the Managed Desktop Service (MDS) and undergraduates and taught postgraduates who joined the University after August 2006. Staff and postgraduates can request to move onto this system at anytime. Once a staff member or postgraduate completes a continuation from for their ITS account; their email is moved to Exchange automatically as a part of the continuation process.
If your email is not hosted by ITS then your account will not be affected.
Once your continuation form has been processed, you will receive an email to confirm the date which your email will be migrated to the Exchange service (this is usually the following Monday after your form has been processed).
After the migration takes place, you will need to access your email differently from how you will have done previously. More details can be found here:
