New China at 60
Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies, Durham, October 1 2009
October 1 2009 is the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Republic. China is greatly in the news at this time with discussion of its ‘rise’ or ‘emergence’. The occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China offers a good opportunity to examine the nature of change in China since 1949 and assess the directions and problems of change for the future. A one-day symposium will be held at Durham University to examine different categories of change which have shaped China since 1949 and will determine the direction for new China in coming decades: state and society; ethnicity and environment; overseas Chinese, China’s foreign policy and its role in globalization. Presenters will be asked to address three questions: what have been the determinants of change between 1949 and 2009? What degree of continuity has there been in China’s thinking or objectives over these 60 years? What does the present direction of change tell us about the future of China internally and internationally?
