Durham Chemistry welcomes new Head of Department

(1 August 2009)

The Department is delighted to welcome Professor John Evans as the new Chairman from 01 August 2009 for three years. John joined the department in 1998 from a prestigious '1851 Research Fellowship' at Oxford University, following a successful PDRA at Oregon State University, USA. John won the RSC Meldola Medal in 1997, was promoted to Reader at Durham in 2003 and to his current Chair of Inorganic and Solid State Chemistry in 2007. We wish John a successful and enjoyable chairmanship and offer him all our collegiate support.

Professor Judith Howard's three year term as Head of the Chemistry Department came to an end on 01 August 2009. As Judith's friends and colleagues will have guessed she won't be putting her feet up and relaxing! In addition to continuing her scientific research and serving on numerous external scientific bodies, she will be taking on new challenges in the University. The Department wishes her every success in these activities. The in-coming chair, Professor John Evans, said, "Judith has done a tremendous job in leading the Department over the last three years. Her energy, drive and enthusiasm are always inspirational. The Department and I are extremely grateful for the huge amount of work she has done for us all as a whole, and for the time, care and thought she's put into advising many of us at the individual level. We'll value her continued advice and wisdom in years to come."
