Ultrafast dynamics of cooperative lattice-charge (spin) coupled phenomena studied by time-resolved spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction

Presented by Prof S Koshihara, Department of Materials Science, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan

12 October 2011 16:15 in CG60

We make a report on the pico- and femto-second (ps and fs) dynamics of the charge- and orbital-ordered (CO- and OO-) systems induced by ultra short light pulse. Melting of CO and OO in organic charge transfer (CT) complexes followed by the formation of a new OO will be discussed based on ps time-resolved IR and X-ray techniques. The obtained results shows that the origin of the gigantic photo-response of organic and inorganic CO- and OO-systems can be attributed to appearance of new state characteristic only for light-induced far-equilibrium condition but not the simple mixture of orbital ordered and disordered states in nanometer scale as like thermally induced phase change.

Electron transport through single π stacked molecules bridging between metal electrodes

Presented by Prof M Kiguchi, Department of Chemistry, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan

12 October 2011 16:15 in CG60

Electron transfer in π-stacked systems has plays a vital role in biological systems, organic electronics, polymer and materials science, typically on the macroscopic level and in bulk. However, electron transport through the initial building blocks of π-stacked systems has never been directly examined because creating molecular junctions of stacked π molecules between nanogap electrodes is nontrivial. We make a report on the first conductance measurement of the single π-stacked molecule junction using the π-stacked molecules enclosed in the self-assembled cages. The single π-stacked molecule junction was fabricated by scanning tunneling microscope (STM) break junction technique. The conductance of the single π-stacked molecule junction decreases as the number of interacting π-molecules increases, but the decrease in conductance relative to the electron transport distance is smaller than in molecular junctions of conventional covalent π-conjugated systems. These results demonstrate that electron transport in π-stacked systems is efficient at the single-molecule level and provide further insight into the design of conductive materials.
