At the invitation of the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, a community of Friars of the Order of Preachers is being established at St Cuthbert’s from September 2012. The friars, also known as Dominicans after their founder St Dominic, will have the care of the Catholic Chaplaincy to Durham University as well as St Cuthbert’s Parish. Dominicans can easily be recognised by their
distinctive white religious habit, sometimes worn with a black cloak or cappa, which in England gained them the nickname of ‘Black Friars’. The charism of the Order is of apostolic preaching flowing from the regular life of prayer of the religious community. (For more infromation see the website of the Enligh Province of the order.)

The Chaplain:

Fr Ben O.P. will be the Durham University Catholic Chaplain. As well as running the Chaplaincy for the students he also looks after the Parish of St Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic Church where the Chaplaincy is based.

Justice and Peace Reps:
