Klute
Arguably the City’s most renowned institution, Klute caters to Durham’s insatiable appetite for cheese and chart music. Popular with both undergraduates and those who wish they still were, Klute finished as proud runner-up in FHM’s ‘Worst Nightclubs in Europe 1996’… but, with the winner of this dubious accolade having since burnt down, it seems the Northern Hemisphere now has nothing to rival this small converted boathouse. Nevertheless, the lure of elusive VIP cards and the wondrously cheap £4 quadruple ‘quaddy-voddy’ has secured Klute’s place on Durham’s nightclub scene.

Studio/Loft
Spread over two floors, each with a bar, dance area, seating booths and plasma screens, Studio offers a more modern mix of music from chart and party to hip hop and R’n’B. During the week, Studio hosts a selection of student-only nights whilst the weekends see it open up to students and locals alike, next door’s Loft adding to the fun by pumping out old-school, retro and classic dance tunes.

Loveshack
‘The Shack’ is located in the £50m Walkergate complex and is open 6 nights a week. The 70s inspired décor (including its very own VW Camper van), on-stage dancers, live DJs and long drinks menu always make for an entertaining evening whilst the musical repertoire has something to suit all tastes, with a wide range from student anthems to indie and R’n’B.

The Bishops' Mill
Next door to Loveshack, this Weatherspoons pub is open until 1am 7 days a week and as a rule plays mainstream music with a bit of dance, R’n’B and indie thrown into the mix. It's incredibly busy on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and is often filled with older people, so expect to hear lots of Meatloaf at the weekend. It's reasonably priced for drinks though, with a rather smooth Châteauneuf-du-Pape for under a tenner…

D.S.U.
The Student Union plays host to “Planet of Sound” (or “Hound” for those in the know) on Fridays, with R’n’B, cheese and dance/ trance music split over three floors. Saturdays, meanwhile, have become known for “Revolver”, an indie and alternative night, whilst posters in and around the Union occasionally advertise other one-off events such as guest DJs and R’n’B nights.
