The Cellar Door
Opened in June 2009, the Cellar Door is the city’s latest offering when it comes to better quality dining, offering a good Sunday Roast. Yet to be truly tested by Durham’s discerning student clientele, early reports are promising, although the drinks are pricey.

Ebony
The City’s only champagne and cocktail bar, Ebony boasts a cellar with over 50 varieties of champagne and a menu of over 100 cocktails, all mixed by experienced staff. Prices are marginally higher here, ranging from £5-7 for a drink, but for a civilized evening, this place is hard to beat.

Jimmy Allen's
This dungeon-cum-bar oozes character with its medieval stone walls and modern furnishings. The house trebles from Monday to Thursday are exceptionally good on the wallet if not on the liver, making it a popular choice amongst Durham’s student crowd.

The Boathouse
This bar, lounge and nightclub is a popular venue, thanks to its outdoor summer terraces looking over the river. A varied cocktail list, atmospheric lighting and an up-to-the-minute sound system ought to appeal to most, although drinks tend to be priced a little higher than in other bars to off-set the free entry.

Fabio's
Situated above the restaurant La Spaghettata, Fabio’s has quickly developed a name for itself as the place for Erasmus students to hang out. Quirky décor, fun music, a late licence and a truly continental atmosphere mean that Fabio’s is always lively whilst the ability to get Italian food sent up from the restaurant below means you’ll never need to stop for midnight munchies on the way home.
