Durham International Buddies
What is it?
It is an opportunity to...
- Learn about other cultures and customs?
- Make international contacts?
- Develop your communication skills?
Durham International Buddies involves small groups of Durham international students linking with small groups of Durham UK students and meeting regularly to talk and learn more about each other.
This can help you to develop your English language skills and your knowledge of UK and other cultures. Graduate employers greatly value both of these attributes. The Deloitte Global Universities Programme is our supporter and are keen to attract applications from participants.
Durham International Buddies is coordinated by the Careers Employability and Enterprise Centre and had 100 participants last year.

Participating in DIB is a brilliant experience. It has given me a chance to meet students from Cambodia, Thailand and the UK. I found my English skills improved, and I learned about different cultures, which would definitely give me an edge to pursue an international career.
Liyun Yang from Shanghai, MSc Finance (2010-2011)
Taking part in DIB has given me the chance to make lifelong friends with students from Mexico, China, Indonesia and Germany in a friendly and welcoming environment.
James Morgan, BA Modern Languages, Van Mildert College
Additional comments included:
'What I found particularly beneficial as a language student interested in global relations was an insight into how other countries and cultures approach different issues'.
