The Howlands building is an additional facilities building that Butler shares with our neighbours Ustinov College. This means that students from both Colleges can use the resources, and for most you need to book them at Reception beforehand.
A very large multipurpose hall exists in this building – and has in excess of 101 wonderful uses! The main ones of these are for college formals and as a sports area.
Music Room
If you play a musical instrument or if you can sing then we have a music practice room in the corner of the Howlands building. This is free to use although if you would like to use any equipment such as the piano, drum kit or guitar amps then you should become a member of the music society.
Meeting Rooms
There is also a large meeting room and a quiet room to be found in this building. You can use these rooms as an alternative place to work or to hold meetings or work as a group. Just ask at reception if it is free.
Laundrette
At some point we all need to do some laundry but luckily it is not too far to come to get it done. There are both washers and driers and there is an option to have automatically-dosed detergent or to use your own. The laundry can get quite busy at popular times in the evenings and weekends so there may be queues!
Shop
Butler is a self-catered college. This does unfortunately mean that there will be days were you wake up and find no milk or bread. The shop on site sells all of the basics along with quite a selection of oriental foods. You can also come here for pic-’n'-mix or ice creams!
Gym
The large, well equipped, gym, means you can burn off the takeaways and booze in style! We have a selection of free weights along with other gym equipment. Membership of the gym costs around £1 a week and it can be used 24-7 as long as there are at least two of you in there at a time. At the freshers’ fair sign up to an induction session and we will show you how everything works safely.
