Sajan Bhakoo

JCR Chair and Tour Rep

Hi everyone! I'm Sajan, your JCR Chair for 2013-14.

It's probably easiest to see the Chair as the person who runs general JCR meetings, however over the course of the year I will also be doing a lot of work behind the scenes as chair of both the Executive Committee and of Finance Comm. In this capacity, it is my responsibility to make sure that everything JCR related runs as smoothly as possible, ultimately meaning that much of my role will be concerned with the upholding and effective management of the standing orders.

Naturally a big part of my role will be the running of JCR elections, so you'll no doubt be hearing from me a lot over the course of the year, providing information about the various roles and ways to get involved at Butler. A lot of this work will be done alongside the 3 Vice-Chairs in Democracy Comm, which uniquely this year will meet with every successful candidate after election to ensure that they are fully aware of their roles as defined in the standing orders. Between me and the Vice-Chairs, we will also attend every single committee at Butler, as well as help with the organisation of every major college event, so that as a team we will be involved in everything which goes through the JCR, allowing us always to ensure efficient practice.

One of the other main parts of my role is encouraging awareness of what the JCR does, so this year I will be working closely with your Livers' Out Officer to get more information out to the houses, as well as working with the Mound Editors to write a dedicated JCR page. I also intend to work hard from Freshers' Week to involve new Butlerites in the JCR, creating a new and far more detailed JCR for Dummies handbook and putting on a stall at the Freshers' Fair. Following the completion of meeting minutes by the Vice-Chairs, I will also be tasked with circulating the finished product to everyone, although I will also strive to provide summary minutes for easier access to information.

In addition to this, I will also be creating an information database of all the useful files from previous events (layouts, budgets, handbooks, risk assessments etc), which will be made available to incoming successful candidates to make their aims clearer and help them get started in the role.

Finally, throughout the year I will be required to meet and work with college staff, and in this capacity I will do my best to uphold the interests of the JCR, but also to promote good relations between the officials in the college and the wider student body.

As always if you have any questions at all about how the JCR works, ways to get involved, or more specifically the work I do as your Chair, please feel free to contact me! :)
