Josephine Butler

Catering

Josephine Butler College and Brooks House Accommodation are self-catered.  This means you have the chance to experiment with your own home-cooking in the kitchen you share with five of your fellow students.  Kitchens are a great social space where you can cook and eat together with your friends, giving you the flexibility and freedom to eat when and what you want!

Our kitchens feature the following facilities:

  • Cooker
  • Sink and washing up area
  • Individual (lockable) storage areas
  • Fridge
  • Freezer
  • Substantial cupboard space
  • Television point
  • Table and dining chairs
  • Comfortable seating
  • Microwave
  • Toaster
  • Kettle
  • Iron and Ironing board
  • Vacuum Cleaner

Sometimes we allocate students to other Colleges in the University which may be part or fully-catered. We will confirm your place of residence at least a week prior to arrival.

If you have special dietary needs, please email presessional.accommodation@durham.ac.uk.

Groceries

Josephine Butler College has an on-site shop providing all the basics necessities and, in addition, supermarket deliveries can be made to the College. Flatmates often club together for their shopping and cook together - the experience of communal cooking and eating is one that leads to close friendships.

In the city centre (easily accessible via the Park and Ride bus directly outside Josephine Butler College) you will find a Tesco Metro which provides amply for the needs of the vast majority of students, as well as many smaller shops and the indoor market which provides discounts to students. Alternatively, there are several bigger supermarkets on the outskirts of the city (including Sainsbury's and Tesco Extra) which can be reached by bus.

And if you don't fancy cooking, a wide variety of meals at very reasonable prices can be purchased from our bar kitchen. Be sure to try the Butler burger if you're feeling peckish or, for something more hearty, our sausage and mash is really filling.
