Undergraduate student placements

During the course of their degree programme, our undergraduate students have the option of undertaking a placement with an organisation - an extremely valuable part of their education, and enormously beneficial to the organisation involved.

Our various degrees and courses provide a solid foundation of relevant theory and quantitative techniques, as well as the key skills that employers seek.

The placement

Placements are a minimum of 40 weeks' work experience with an organisation between late June and September the following year (i.e. 40 weeks over 15 months).

Through guidance and mentoring, students will develop new skills, build confidence and maturity and gain relevant experience of how organisations operate, as well as begin to focus on a specific career and improve their employment prospects.

Placement support

Placements are a valuable contribution to a student's development. We will work closely with you to ensure success for both parties, providing a Placement Co-ordinator and academic tutor to support and guide the student throughout.

You nominate an individual who is responsible for the placement, to provide the student with clear objectives and a range of development opportunities, and to provide us with a report on their performance and progress at the end of the placement.

The benefits to employers

Your organisation will get real value and benefits from hosting a student, including:

  • Fresh ideas - students bring a different perspective
  • Future employees - placements are an excellent source of future graduates, giving you the chance to test their abilities
  • Project work - students undertake projects that would otherwise occupy valuable time
  • Knowledge transfer - the student brings the latest knowledge and theories
  • Internal staff development - your staff can develop supervisory skills
  • Energy and enthusiasm - placement students can achieve exceptional results
  • Time and resources

“The Durham University Business School placement programme gave us the opportunity to develop a relatively new role within the team. Dwayne brought the necessary skill set to be able to scope the role, implement a draft accountability profile and pass on his knowledge to other members of the team. He was able to gain a broad range of professional experience, whilst working with a wide variety of people within Rolls-Royce and our revenue sharing partners. Durham is a target University for Rolls-Royce because of the high calibre, high quality graduates it produces.”
