The Essential MBA - essential reading
(22 November 2011)
Newly published by Sage, and compiled by Professor Susan Miller, Durham Business School's Director of MBA Programmes, this book is a really useful guide to those undertaking an MBA, those considering taking one and practising managers who want to understand some of the core ideas in business and management.
Covering the essential core material taught in most MBA programmes it brings together the different areas of business and management into one text. It provides a succinct and coherent overview of each subject but also offers a more integrative understanding of the issues and debates within the domain as a whole.
In addition to this, The Essential MBA also offers a critical understanding of the subject matter by discussing the underlying assumptions of mainstream theories and reviewing alternative approaches.
The book comprises individual chapters on topics including Organisational Behaviour, HRM, Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Economics, Operations Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, Strategy, Research Methods and Study Skills, each written by a subject specialist.
Whilst intended for those taking an MBA, the material is relevant for those on pre-experience Masters in business and management and undergraduates undertaking business degrees.
Dr Miller comments: "The aim is to combine an overview of the key areas of management with a critical orientation."
The overview provides students with a useful map of the terrain of business and management. The critical orientation offers an alternative to more orthodox texts, assisting students to undertake critical analyses of current ideas and debates – a skill required at Master’s level but one that many students often find challenging.
An excellent supplement to subject-specific texts The Esssential MBA is a valuable and useful guide to the MBA as a whole.
