More success for Durham Business School sailors

(26 July 2007)

Crew Durham

Once again Durham Business School MBA students have taken part in the annual Cranfield Regatta. Hosted by Cranfield University’s School of Management in Portsmouth, the regatta attracts crews from leading business schools and enables MBA students and alumni from all over Europe to meet their counterparts from other business schools and employers.

Running from Friday 20th July 2007 to Sunday 22nd July, this the 16th Cranfield Regatta, involved two days of competitive racing on the Solent, against identical yachts crewed by MBA (Master in Business Administration) students and graduates from business schools in Europe and the USA. Last year, Durham won over all, beating off strong competition from 17 other boats. This year, sailing a SunFast 37 yacht and under the guidance of a professional skipper, the new crew finished a very creditable 3rd defending against the 20+ other entries. An excellent, competitive and highly enjoyable weekend. The weather was more than kind once racing started with a nice mix of wind conditions, sunshine and only the occasional shower. London Business School picked up 1st & 2nd place slots and were just a bit too strong. The Durham team, with 4 novice sailors and none with race experience secured two 2nd places, a 5th and a 6th in the four races, with some toe-to-toe racing featuring in nearly every race. The crew (pictured), still managed to keep their spirits up despite the 15 hour-long journey through the floods to get to Portsmouth. This year’s the Durham crew was supported by sponsorship from South Tyneside based IT and management consultancy, Tadpole Consulting Services Ltd (TadCon).
