Residencies
The Global MBA programme offers a full blended-learning experience. Students following its standard and specialist Finance pathways have the opportunity to combine online study with a full classroom experience, a number of elective modules each year being available on a block-taught basis through our innovative programme of Residencies.
Global MBA Residencies provide an invaluable chance to immerse yourself in one of the key business disciplines, to forge relationships with your classmates, and to prepare for those all-important assignments and examinations. Delivered over a three-to-four-day period by leading Durham faculty, these modules follow the exact same format as those experienced by our on-campus Executive MBA students. Indeed, a particularly distinctive feature of this programme is the opportunity to take elective modules alongside your EMBA peers in either Durham or Frankfurt, extending the range of options available further and enhancing the strength of your global social networks.
Summer School
Our annual Summer School is the highlight of the Global MBA calendar. Over a four-week period, this unique event attracts around 100 students from across the globe, with up to ten block-taught modules available on a full credit-bearing basis. Whether you choose to attend for a few days of the full four weeks, this really is an exciting opportunity to spend time with Durham faculty and your MBA peers, all within the magnificent setting of a world heritage site.
Summer School is about more than just attending classes, however. Each year, we organise professional development activities, guest speaker events and social events. For all of our students from across the globe, this is a truly stimulating opportunity to live the Global MBA experience. View the 2013 Summer School programme and associated module information
The ‘Flipped’ Classroom
One of the defining features of all of our block-taught Residencies is the extensive use we make of the “flipped” learning technique. Most programmes of this nature offering a block-taught option typically deliver a very traditional classroom experience, lecture-based content being punctuated with group break-out activities. At Durham, however, we do things very differently.
We work hard to maximise the value of precious classroom time. A growing number of our modules make extensive use of the Flipped Classroom technique, priming students before attending class with online lectures introducing key tools and concepts. This frees classroom time for more in-depth learning activities, a range of group activities, simulations and case study analyses being used to apply those tools and concepts to real-world business situations under the direction of an experienced faculty member.
The Flipped Classroom technique is at the cutting edge of modern teaching practice around the world. It leads to deeper learning and enhanced student performance, as well as being more practical and grounded in key business issues.
