The College system
All full-time postgraduates become a member of one of our Colleges or Societies. As well as offering a wide range of social and cultural activities, the colleges provide support and a sense of belonging during your time in Durham. You can find out more about our colleges on the main University website.
Once you have selected the college which seems right for you, you should state your preference on your application form. If you leave your application open, we will choose a college on your behalf.
Some colleges are able to offer limited residential accommodation to postgraduates. You will be contacted by Colleges Division once you have formally accepted your programme offer. The University guarantees college accommodation to postgraduate students who complete the accommodation application process by 1st July, including paying the £250 accommodation deposit. Please note we cannot guarantee your first choice of college.
If you prefer to live in privately-rented accommodation, the University's Accommodation Office will be able to help you find something suitable. If you 'live out', you can still take full advantage of the facilities your college offers. More details of this will also be provided in the Joining Instructions which will be issued in July.
