Bridging the Gaps: BSI Dragons' Den
The BSI has secured £40k from the EPSRC Bridging the Gaps funding awarded to Durham University. With the £40k allocated the BSI will undertake the following projects during the allotted time period (which ends July 2012). These build on previous successful schemes used within Durham but also add a new feature, that of the Dragons Den specifically aimed at early career and postdoctoral researchers. This format has been used successfully at a number of UK universities and is being run in conjunction with the Durham Business Innovation Service.
The BSI Dragons' Den
This scheme is focused on new collaborations with a strong emphasis on supporting innovative early career stage scientists, including postgraduate researchers and Junior Academics. The aim is to fund 2/3 innovative, new projects each with a maximum value of £7K.
The next event in the Dragons' Den scheme will be the Dragons' Den itself which will be held Tuesday 27 March, in the IAS Seminar Room, Cosin's Hall, Palace Green. The format of the Dragons' Den event will be a 5 minute, 5 slide presentation to a panel (3-5 people) followed by 15 minutes of questions with decisions made by the end of the day.
To take part in this event and bid for funding please submit a research proposal by no later than 5 pm on the 21 March to alex.probert@dur.ac.uk. Applications are welcome from all early career stage researchers/academics, even those who did not attend the Networking Event.
Further details about what is required in the research proposal are given below:
Research proposals must:
- Be a maximum of 2 pages in length;
- Briefly outline the project proposed;
- Highlight how the project is aligned with the BSI's interdisciplinary research approach;
- Name the members and roles of the research team (that the central team members must be early career stage);
- Specify how much funding is requested and provide a breakdown;
