Centre for Brass Band Studies
Centre for Brass Band Studies
The Centre for Brass Band Studies was founded in 2003 with the support of Lord Derek Foster and Sir Kenneth Calman. Its Director and Conductor in Residence is the celebrated brass band musician and arranger Ray Farr. The Centre aims to promote one of the most distinctive aspects of the North-East's cultural heritage - its vibrant tradition of brass band performance.
As well as its strong regional roots, the Centre has a national and international profile, attracting brass musicians and conductors from around the world. It offers a programme of teaching which includes modules at undergraduate and Master's levels, as well as workshops, festivals and short courses.
The varied and vigorous concert life of Durham includes frequent brass band performances given by Durham University Brass Band in Residence as well as by famous visiting bands. The Centre has strong links with the Durham International Brass Festival and with the Sage, Gateshead.
