Blueprint Revamps (Business Plan) Competition for 2010

Exciting new changes lie ahead for the 2010 finalists of Blueprint: The North East Universities Business Planning Competition.  Each of the institutional competitions at the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside are now in full swing, the winners of which will go head-to-head with each other at the 7th Annual Regional Grand Final in late October.

Kromek Buys Up California Tech Firm

PIONEERING North East tech­nology firm Kromek has giv­en itself an outpost in Amer­ica by snapping up Californian technology company Nova.  The Durham University spin-out, which is developing devices aimed at detecting potential terrorists at air­ports, spent several months in discussion with its US target before sealing an acquisition deal which is funded partly with cash and partly with stock.

2010 Durham Blueprint Winners

Durham University's Blueprint 2010 competition took place on Wednesday 5th May, hosted at the picturesque St. Chad's college in the heart of Durham City.  The University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Higgins, welcomed the finalists and guests for the evening's black tie awards ceremony celebrating the successes of this year's business planning competition finalists.

Sedgefield-based Kromek win £12.3m injection

Durham Spinout Company - KROMEK has won a £12.3m cash injection which will inevitably mean more jobs for the region, it says. 

The Company has attracting worldwide interest after developing an airport scanner to detect explosives or narcotics in bottles without opening them.

Small Firms taking on the Global Giants

In the continuing fight against terrorism, it may come as a surprise that a small British firm with just 45 members of staff is at the vanguard of tightening security in the global airline sector.

The company in question is County Durham-based Kromek, which develops and makes the latest generation of full-colour, 3D, X-ray machines.

The 2009 Winner of the Blueprint Science and Technology prize was FSCAN, based at Durham University.  FScan has developed a novel technology platform for use in medical imaging, which is a significant improvement on that currently available to the medical industry.
