Welcome

The School of Biological & Biomedical Sciences is composed of 45 academic staff with research and teaching interests which range from structural biology and biochemistry to ecosystem biology.  The School also has strong interdisciplinary links with the physical and social sciences.  Research is broadly focused around 5 research groups which  address major biological questions relating to:

  • Stress, signaling and environmental adaptation
  • Cell structure, function and development

We are a research-led department, which had at least 90% of its research rated as International Quality in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with 50% recognised as Internationally Excellent or World-Leading. With excellent facilities for carry out both both teaching and research we offer high quality undergraduate teaching programmes and a supportive environment for research staff and postgraduate students.

 Research within the School contributes to major University initiatives, such as the Biophysical Sciences Institute, Durham Energy Institute and the Institute of Hazard & Risk Research  and the North East Stem Cell Initiative.  While research is based at the Durham campus, in the School and in the Centre for Bioactive Chemistry, our teaching is delivered  both on our main site (Biology degrees) and at the Queen's campus, Stockton (Biomedical Sciences).

The School's teaching programmes scored 24/24 (Biology) and 23/24 (Biomedical Sciences) in the most recent national teaching quality review QAA.

We also support teaching programmes in Natural Sciences and Medicine.
