Norse in the North Conference: Communities and Individuals

Norse in the North is an exciting new postgraduate-driven project designed to serve as a platform for demonstrating the strength and originality of Old Norse research in the north of England.

It is being held in partnership with the universities of York and Leeds; our three universities all have a world class reputation for their tuition and research in this area. Durham will thus be the inaugural host of the only annual and dedicated Old Norse postgraduate conference in the UK, which will cycle between the three universities. The project is being run by current PhD students David Varley and Nicola Lugosch, along with current post-doc tutor John Shafer and former Durham student Betsie Cleworth. The inaugural conference will take place on Saturday 28th April 2012, with the theme of 'Communities and Individuals'. A provisional programme has been drawn up, and it promises to be an entertaining, dynamic and highly productive day; Dr Martin Arnold of the University of Hull will be appearing as the keynote speaker. The conference is being run under the aegis of the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies, allowing it to be truly interdisciplinary. The staff of St Aidan's College have been extremely generous in offering to host the conference, and the project has received a significant degree of funding from the Institute of Advanced Study. The Norse in the North project has also obtained a grant from the Viking Society for Northern Research, the premier academic organisation in the field of Old Norse studies.
