Saturday 16th June, Scarborough, Rotunda Museum and town walk Leaders: Andrew Millard, Erik Matthews
The morning will be spent in the Grade 2 listed
Rotunda Museum. As well as an important collection of Jurassic geology from the
Yorkshire coast, it houses Gristhorpe Man. He was discovered in 1834 by William
Beswick (the Father of Geology) in an oak coffin with grave goods. In the
afternoon Erik will lead the walk which will include a visit to the Castle.
Sunday 22nd July, Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum Leader for Vindolanda: Andrew Birley
Vindolanda is a Roman archaeological site of primary
importance, where excavations take place annually. Dr Birley will lead us
around the site and talk about the excavation. Please note that there will be
no work on the excavations on Sunday. The Roman Army Museum at Carvoran has
three galleries illustrating the life of the Roman Army, displaying “an
authentic and dramatic tribute to Rome’s extraordinary military legacy” (web
site). There are coffee shops at both sites.
Saturday 18th August, Hexham: Walk and Lecture Leaders: Peter Ryder, Eric Cambridge
This is a joint meeting with members of C.B.A. North.
On arrival, we will meet Peter Ryder in the Market
Place outside the Abbey Shop for a guided walk around Hexham’s historic
buildings. This will be followed by an optional tour around the Old Goal. (Pay
entrance fee on the day.)
After lunch we meet in the Lockart Room, Moot Hall
where Eric Cambridge will talk about Hexham Abbey.
Tea will be available at 3.30pm (pay on the day, but
numbers are required in advance).
Saturday, 15th September, The Victoria Tunnel, Ouseburn, Newcastle
We will have a guided tour of the Victoria Tunnel
(used as a wagon way to transport coal), which runs beneath Newcastle from the
Town Moor to the Tyne. During WW2 it was used as an air raid shelter. Two types
of tour are on offer. The long tour lasts for 2 hours and the short one for 30
minutes. People with mobility problems will not be allowed on the long tour.
Walking shoes and a warm, washable jacket are essential.
