This special issue of Contemporary South Asia brings together articles from several recent participants in the Annual Pakistan Workshop, held in the Lake District since 1986. The papers demonstrate some of the complexities of Pakistan studies and the importance of avoiding simplistic categorisations of Pakistan, Pakistanis or Pakistani diaspora.
