Medical Anthropology Seminars (MARG): Research in Conflict Affected and Fragile States: Examples from Afghanistan.

Presented by Dr Jean-Francois Trani, Research Fellow, Leonard Cheshire Disability & Inclusive Development Centre, UCL

4 February 2009 12:00 in Anthropology Seminar Room (D104), Dawson Building

Carrying out large scale household surveys in Conflict Affected Fragile States is a complex endeavour. It stirs up multiple scientific questionings and generates major organisational intricacies that are often neglected by the literature. This leads to general concern about ways and means to ensure scientific quality of household surveys in such environment. In the presentation, we will discuss these questions in the context of Afghanistan mainly, with a few considerations about an ongoing large scale Darfur survey. We will also discuss some of the various results of the Afghan survey: disability prevalence, access to health services and socioeconomic determinants of mental distress.
