Biography

Aurang Zeb obtained MSc in anthropology from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad in 2006. His master dissertation focused on the changing perception of time in rural areas of Dera Ghazi Khan District, Pakistan. He then worked at the World Bank on impact evaluation of a large microfinance program in Pakistan. He also worked with Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund on capacity building programs for the communities and staff of local microfinance institutions.

PhD Research

His PhD research started in January 2009 as Durham Doctoral Fellowship. The research focuses on the cultural perception of time and space in relation to social change in the rural areas of Lodhran District, Pakistan. The fieldwork for this study was carried out through 2010. The study contributes some theoretical and methodological insights to anthropology of time and space. It analyses the socially embedded concepts of time and space in rural context, and how these are reflected in the socioeconomic life. While investigating the temporal-spatial social relationships through formal and informal temporal markers as well as physical and social proximities such as gender and generations, it analyses the social organisation of time and space taking into account a gradual shift from seasonal agricultural economy to the market one. When governmental and non-governmental agencies carry on their projects without taking into account the people's sensitivities towards their indigenous models of time and space, it ultimately results into the failure of the development programmes. Therefore, this study finds out the practical implications of the cultural perceptions of time and space as underlying factors behind accepting and rejecting social change.
