The Durham Anthropology Department is the largest in the UK and one of the largest in the world. It is one of the very few in the UK which pursues both biological and socio-cultural anthropology and is notable for its efforts to integrate the two disciplines. The department was rated as demonstrating 'International Excellence' in the last Research Assessment Exercise, and the expertise of our staff covers a wide range of topics and regions. We have a growing and active postgraduate community, including international students from around the world. We offer 5 different taught postgraduate degrees (MA Research Methods (Anthropology), MA Sociocultural Anthropology, MSc Development Anthropology, MSc Evolutionary Anthropology, MSc Medical Anthropology), while the thesis topics of recent research students reflect anthropology in all its forms. We have been successful in helping our students win funding to support their studies from a wide range of funding providers such as research council competitions, e.g. ESRC, MRC/ESRC, ESRC/NERC and ESRC CASE studentships; KTP partnerships; Durham Doctoral Fellowships; Rotary Ambassadorial Fellowships; and via various staff research grants. We also offer teaching bursaries worth £3000 per academic year.
