University Council

University Council is the executive and governing body of the University and its Trustee Board. Its membership comprises seven appointed staff members, a majority of independent appointed lay members (12) and the President of the Durham Students' Union. The Vice-Chancellor is an ex-officio member of Council. Meetings of Council are normally held six times a year. Council is supported by a number of key committees including:

  • Finance and General Purposes Committee (current Chair: Joe Docherty)
  • Audit Committee (current Chair: Andrew Mitchell)
  • Remuneration Committee (current Chair: Alistair Buchanan)
  • Nominations Committee (current Chair: Robert Gillespie)

The University Executive Committee is a joint Committee of the Council and the Senate, as is the Ethics Advisory Committee (current Chair: The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove) and the Academic Progression Committee (current Chair: Chris Higgins).
