Recreating the slave ship Brookes

The focus of the day was the recreation of the iconic image of the slave ship Brookes. The plan of how the slaves were stowed aboard the Brookes was commissioned by the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade and was used to demonstrate how awful conditions were on the Middle Passage. The main holding area was capable of holding 274 slaves and was divided into different sections: males, females, young people and children. Once everyone was in place a two minute silence was observed so that we could reflect on the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade.
